Following the incident, the Secret Service faced harsh criticism for security lapses. Reports emerged that Crooks had been identified as suspicious an hour before the shooting, having been spotted with a rangefinder and a backpack. Further fueling public outrage were claims that a sniper team had Crooks in their sights 20 minutes before the shooting and even captured his photo. Despite these red flags, the Secret Service allegedly only classified Crooks as a threat 10 minutes before Trump’s arrival.

Adding another layer of complexity to the incident was the presence of conflicting narratives. While some reports claimed that spectators and law enforcement witnessed Crooks scaling the building and that an officer even confronted him, others suggested the roof was never properly secured. The ambiguity surrounding the Secret Service’s role in securing the venue further intensified scrutiny.
The gravity of the situation led to multiple investigations. The Department of Homeland Security’s Inspector General initiated three separate investigations, the FBI took the lead on a criminal investigation into the assassination attempt, and House Speaker Mike Johnson pledged Congressional resources for yet another investigation.
Amidst mounting pressure and calls for her resignation, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle appeared before the House Oversight and Accountability Committee. The hearing aimed to uncover the events leading up to the shooting and address the apparent security breaches.
Cheatle’s testimony, however, did little to quell public concern or satisfy the lawmakers’ demand for answers. However, Cheatle remained noncommittal, maintaining that all necessary assets were provided for the Butler event.
The hearing also brought to light concerns about the Secret Service’s threat assessment procedures. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez questioned the agency’s decision to proceed with the rally despite identifying Crooks as suspicious, highlighting the potential danger of distinguishing between “suspicious” and “threatening” individuals.
The effectiveness of the Secret Service’s protective perimeter also came under fire. Lawmakers questioned why the perimeter didn’t encompass the building where Crooks was stationed, particularly given its proximity to the stage and the range of an AR-15 rifle.
Further amplifying the gravity of the situation was the revelation of an existing threat on Trump’s life from Iran, stemming from the 2020 killing of an Iranian military official. Despite acknowledging awareness of this threat, Cheatle insisted that adequate security measures were in place, a claim met with skepticism from lawmakers.
The hearing concluded with more questions than answers. Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle expressed frustration over Cheatle’s lack of transparency and her reliance on the pending FBI report.
