The Alarm’s Mike Peters Battles Cancer, Seeks Stem Cell Donor

In April 2022, Mike Peters, lead singer of the Welsh rock band The Alarm, faced a life-threatening health crisis. Already a long-term survivor of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) diagnosed in 1995, Peters found himself battling pneumonia, a dangerous complication for leukemia patients. His lungs filled with blood, the leukemia intensified, and he was diagnosed with bronchiectasis, a chronic lung disease. Peters recalls the harrowing experience of being hospitalized, surrounded by critically ill patients, and realizing the severity of his condition.

Peters persevered, channeling his health struggles into The Alarm’s album Forwards. The album reflects the hope and resilience he found amidst adversity. However, another health challenge emerged in April 2024. A lump in his neck led to a diagnosis of Richter’s syndrome, transforming his CLL into an aggressive lymphoma. Peters vividly describes his swollen glands and the devastating impact of the diagnosis, forcing the cancellation of The Alarm’s US tour.

Supported by his wife Jules, a breast cancer survivor, Peters continues to fight. He acknowledges the gravity of his situation, needing a stem cell transplant to combat the aggressive lymphoma. Despite the ongoing chemotherapy and uncertainty, Peters remains optimistic, drawing strength from his family, music, and the beautiful Welsh landscape he calls home. He emphasizes the importance of a healthy body and mind in confronting such formidable diseases.

While acknowledging his limited time, Peters is determined to make a lasting impact. He expresses gratitude for access to excellent medical care and the high likelihood of finding a matching stem cell donor. Recognizing that most patients require unrelated donors, Peters highlights the crucial role of stem cell registration in saving lives.

Through the Love Hope Strength Foundation, Peters and his wife are actively promoting the “One in a Million” campaign to encourage more people to become blood stem cell donors. They stress the urgency of increasing the donor pool, as currently only 60% of patients find a match. Peters urges everyone to consider the potential to save a loved one or a stranger by joining the registry at www.lovehopestrength.org. He emphasizes the profound impact of becoming someone’s “one in a million,” offering a chance at survival.
