Canadian tennis star Gabriela Dabrowski revealed she was diagnosed with breast cancer in April 2024, months before winning a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics. The 32-year-old shared her diagnosis and journey in a candid Instagram post on December 31st, highlighting the importance of early detection.
Dabrowski first detected a lump in her left breast during a self-exam in the spring of 2023. Initially, doctors dismissed her concerns. However, when the lump grew larger by the following spring, she sought further examination at Advent Health Hospital in Wesley Chapel, Florida. A biopsy confirmed her worst fears: cancer.
Following the diagnosis, Dabrowski underwent two surgeries at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville and began radiation therapy. Remarkably, she continued to train and compete, even with limited mobility in her left arm. Her coach, Patrick Daciek, adapted their training sessions to accommodate her recovery. This determination allowed her to participate in Wimbledon, the Paris Olympics, and the US Open, all while undergoing treatment.
