Leno, a burn victim himself from a 2022 accident, spoke with CNN’s Anderson Cooper about his volunteer efforts and the community spirit arising from the tragedy. He explained that he and his team were providing barbecue for the crews, recognizing the need for hot food amidst the reliance on boxed lunches. He quipped about the practicality of owning a fire truck in Los Angeles.

In a poignant interview, Leno described the devastation as resembling Hiroshima, with miles of nothingness where homes once stood. He estimated that 10,000 buildings were destroyed, a number so vast it’s difficult to comprehend. Leno compared the sense of unity in response to the fires to the aftermath of the September 11th attacks, noting how people put aside their differences in times of crisis.

He predicted the rebuilding process will take years and present immense financial challenges, with estimated damages reaching $160 billion, exceeding the capacity of any insurance company. Despite the insurmountable obstacles, Leno expressed confidence in the community’s resilience and ability to overcome the disaster.

The Pacific Palisades fire, which began on January 7th, was followed by two more, one of which is being investigated as arson. The fires have displaced over 80,000 people, including numerous celebrities, and tragically claimed 25 lives according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner.
