A tragic train accident in Maharashtra, India, resulted in the death of 13 passengers on Wednesday, January 22nd. The incident occurred after a false alarm of a fire onboard the Pushpak Express led to panicked passengers disembarking the moving train, only to be struck by another train on an adjacent track.
The Pushpak Express was en route to Mumbai, approximately 170 miles from its destination, when it came to a sudden halt. Local authorities, including Pachora police inspector Ashok Pawar, have indicated that the fire rumor originated from two passengers who misconstrued a tea seller’s shouts nearby. In the ensuing panic, some passengers pulled the emergency chain, bringing the Pushpak Express to a stop. As passengers exited the stationary Pushpak Express, they unknowingly stepped into the path of the oncoming Karnataka Express, which was traveling on a parallel track. Ten additional passengers, comprised of eight men and two women, sustained injuries in the collision.
