Mom’s Terminal Melanoma Started as a Line on Her Fingernail: A Story of Misdiagnosis and Missed Opportunities

Kelly Heather, a 38-year-old mother of four from Kent, England, is battling stage four melanoma that has spread to her brain. Her journey began in 2017 with a seemingly innocuous dark line on her fingernail. Initially dismissed by doctors, the line progressively darkened, eventually leading to a melanoma diagnosis. Heather now believes that medical negligence and a refusal to conduct further scans after an initial surgery allowed the cancer to metastasize, ultimately reaching her brain.

Heather underwent a series of procedures, starting with the removal of her nail bed. Six months later, a wart-like growth appeared, prompting doctors to recommend finger amputation.

Despite her pleas for additional scans following the amputation, doctors refused. Two years later, a lump in her armpit signaled the cancer’s spread to her lymphatic system. The melanoma, now metastatic, necessitated the removal of 20 lymph nodes.

Following surgery and immunotherapy, Heather was declared in remission in April 2024. However, during her 35th week of pregnancy with her fourth child, Te-Jay, in December, she experienced a seizure caused by a brain tumor sharing the same genetic profile as her melanoma.

Heather delivered Te-Jay and underwent brain surgery two weeks later. Doctors were unable to remove the entire tumor due to the risk of paralysis, leaving a portion requiring radiation treatment. Adding to the anguish, there was a 25% chance the cancer could have spread to Te-Jay, who now undergoes regular monitoring.

Facing a terminal diagnosis, Heather reflects on the potential impact of early detection. “I do wonder what would have happened if I got that one scan I begged for,” she laments. She questions whether different choices could have altered her current situation. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support Heather, her partner Tom Woodcock, and their four children, Preston, Brendan, Rhea, and Te-Jay. The funds will assist with the financial burdens associated with her treatment and care.

Heather’s story underscores the critical importance of early diagnosis and advocating for one’s health. Her fight continues, fueled by the love for her children and the hope for a miracle.
