Princess Kate Makes Handprints with Children at Welsh Hospice

Princess Kate Middleton recently visited Tŷ Hafan children’s hospice in South Wales, where she engaged in a heartwarming handprint activity with a young girl and her family. The visit, which took place on January 30th, marked the Princess of Wales becoming the hospice’s new patron.

During her visit, Kate met the Forbes family, whose 12-year-old son, Felix, receives care at the hospice. Felix was accompanied by his parents, Alex and Dan, and his sisters, Lottie (9) and Maggie (4). The hospice features a hallway adorned with handprints, creating a welcoming atmosphere. While discussing the handprints with the family, Kate learned that Maggie hadn’t yet added hers.

The Princess playfully suggested that she and Maggie get their handprints done together. Lottie enthusiastically joined in, painting Kate’s hand while Kate reciprocated by painting Maggie’s. Alex Forbes shared with PEOPLE that Maggie was initially shy, but Lottie was thrilled to have her picture shared online.

Both parents praised Kate’s warm and approachable demeanor. Alex described the interaction as “really warming and easy,” noting how Kate’s maternal instincts were evident in her engagement with the children. Dan emphasized the significance of Kate’s patronage, highlighting her ability to connect with families like theirs on a personal level. He stated that Kate’s visit would raise awareness for the crucial work done by the hospice.

Tŷ Hafan provides comprehensive support for families with children facing life-shortening conditions. Alex underscored the importance of the hospice’s services for siblings, offering respite and emotional support. Felix, who has Miller-Dieker Syndrome, a rare neurological disorder, has defied the odds by living well beyond his initial prognosis. Dan recounted a time last year when the family feared for Felix’s life and found solace in the hospice’s unwavering support.

The Forbes family sees a parallel between Kate and the late Princess Diana, who was initially slated to be the hospice’s patron. They believe Kate shares Diana’s ability to connect with people authentically and bring attention to important causes. Kate inherited the patronage from King Charles, who had held the role since 2001.
