Josh Brolin Developed Bell’s Palsy from Stress of Moving Back to Childhood Home

Actor Josh Brolin recently revealed on Rob Lowe’s podcast, “Literally! With Rob Lowe,” that the stress of moving back to his childhood home in Montecito, California, triggered a mild case of Bell’s Palsy. Brolin, 56, described the experience as incredibly stressful, directly linking it to the development of the condition.

Bell’s Palsy, as defined by the Mayo Clinic, is a temporary weakness or paralysis of the facial muscles. Brolin stated unequivocally that stress was the sole cause, emphasizing, “There’s nothing else to blame it on.” He also mentioned a previous instance of Bell’s Palsy 17 years prior, coincidentally also linked to contemplating a move back to Montecito.

Despite the initial stress and health scare, Brolin has since found peace in his return. He shared that positive childhood memories are resurfacing, overshadowing previous negative associations with the area. He’s now experiencing a renewed appreciation for his hometown, rediscovering cherished locations and experiences. “All these things are popping out of the ground,” Brolin remarked. He reflected on how his childhood, though challenging, may not have been as dramatic as he previously portrayed, acknowledging the tendency of storytellers to amplify experiences.

Brolin’s candid conversation with Lowe also touched upon other personal experiences. He referenced his recently published memoir, “From Under the Truck,” which details his unconventional upbringing, journey to fame, relationship with his late mother, Jane Agee Brolin, struggles with addiction, and experiences with fatherhood. The book delves into his rise to prominence in films like “The Goonies” and “No Country for Old Men.”

In a previous appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” Brolin recounted a formative experience with LSD at the age of 13. He described a profound and positive experience, attributing a sense of wisdom and comfort to the encounter. He humorously questioned his parents’ role in the incident, wondering if they had unknowingly provided him with the drug. He acknowledged the early age at which he and his friends in Santa Barbara began experimenting with drugs.
