A 12-year-old Texas girl, Miranda Sips, tragically passed away just shy of her 13th birthday, and authorities allege that her mother and stepfather neglected to provide her with necessary medical care, ultimately leading to her death.
Atosa County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Denise Banetta, 36, and Gerald Gonzalez, 40, charging them with first-degree felony injury to a child by omission. According to Sheriff’s statements, Miranda, a cheerleader at Jordanon Junior High, suffered a severe injury on August 8th. However, emergency services were not contacted until four days later, on August 12th.
During those four days, Miranda remained at home, unconscious, with her parents allegedly attempting to care for her themselves. The Sheriff described the care provided as “outrageous,” noting that Miranda was only minimally responsive, able to slightly move her hands and flutter her eyes. While the specific details of her injuries remain undisclosed pending autopsy results, the Sheriff emphasized their life-threatening nature.
The Sheriff revealed that the parents confessed to delaying medical attention, but their explanations for the cause of the injuries remain unclear. Despite the lack of clarity surrounding the initial injury, the Sheriff stressed the gravity of the situation, stating, “You still have a duty as a parent to provide medical care for a 12-year-old child.”
He further explained that the charges stem not from accusations of assault or attempted murder, but from the parents’ alleged failure to seek timely and appropriate medical care for their daughter. The Sheriff noted a concerning lack of remorse from the mother, while the stepfather exhibited some regret.
The couple reportedly claimed their intention was to nurse Miranda back to health themselves, fearing the scrutiny and attention they might face if the true extent of her injuries were known. This line of thinking, the Sheriff remarked, was “strangely ironic.”
While murder charges are not currently being pursued, the investigation remains active. The Sheriff confirmed that the case hinges on determining the veracity of the parents’ claims and understanding the full scope of Miranda’s injuries.
This tragic case highlights the critical importance of prompt and appropriate medical care for children, especially in cases of serious injury. The investigation continues as authorities work to uncover the full truth behind Miranda Sips’ untimely death.
