Idaho Man Shot After Charging at Police with Knife Following Stabbing Spree and Attempted Bank Robbery

Newly released bodycam footage reveals the tense moments leading up to an officer-involved shooting in Boise, Idaho, where a suspect, Jeremy Waste, was shot after a crime spree that included stabbing his father, attempting to rob a bank, and charging at police with a knife.

The incident began on November 18, 2022, when Jeremy Waste stabbed his father at a residence in Boise. The father was hospitalized and later released, but Waste fled the scene, setting off a manhunt.

Days later, on November 21st, Waste attempted to rob a bank in Boise. A bank employee described the harrowing encounter: “All of a sudden I felt somebody…like pulling on the doors like crazy, and he had a black mask on.” Waste fled the scene in a gray Honda Odyssey minivan after realizing the bank doors were locked.

Later that day, Ada County Dispatch received a frantic 911 call reporting that Waste was attempting to break into a home. The caller, visibly shaken, pleaded with the dispatcher: “This is my [son] Jeremy Waste who has [a warrant out] for stabbing his [father]…out in front of my house trying to get in…he just got back in his van…he’s coming back in, coming back in… Please send someone out here, there should be people already out here looking for him in the area.”

Law enforcement officers intensified their efforts to locate Waste. Investigators attempted to track his cell phone location, but those efforts were unsuccessful. At approximately 4:45 PM, he was spotted riding a BMX bicycle at a local park. By 5:30 PM, officers caught up with Waste on a bike path.

Bodycam footage captures the intense moments as an officer spots Waste and gives chase on foot. “Somebody get me the Grand Forks, he’s on the bike going eastbound,” the officer calls out over his radio.

As the officer closes in, he repeatedly orders Waste to show his hands. “Let me see your hands! Let me see your hands! Let me see your hands!” he shouts. Waste ignores the commands, instead, he pulls out a knife and charges toward the officer.

A second officer, witnessing the imminent threat to his fellow officer, opens fire, striking Waste.

“Shots fired, we’re on the bike path,” the officer calls out over his radio. Officers immediately move in to secure the scene. “Let me see your hands! Drop the knife! Throw it! Drop the knife!” an officer yells as Waste lay injured on the ground.

Emergency medical services transported Waste to a local hospital where he was treated for his injuries. He was later booked into the Ada County Jail.

The Boise Police Department released the bodycam footage and audio recordings to the public this month after a thorough investigation by the Ada County Critical Incident Task Force. The Twin Falls Prosecuting Attorney, after reviewing the investigation, determined that the officers’ actions were justified.

Last month, Jeremy Waste was sentenced to 30 years in prison for stabbing his father and for aggravated assault on a police officer. He will be eligible for parole in 10 years.
