The legendary Swedish pop group ABBA, renowned for their iconic victory at the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest with “Waterloo,” received one of Sweden’s highest honors on Friday. The quartet was bestowed with the royal Order of Vasa as Commanders of the First Class, recognizing their exceptional contributions to both Swedish and international music.

ABBA reunited at the Royal Palace in Stockholm to receive the royal Order of Vasa.
This momentous occasion marks the first time in 50 years that the Order of the Vasa has been awarded. The order, which acknowledges outstanding personal achievements and contributions to Sweden, was revived in late 2022. This reactivation opened up the Royal Orders to Swedish citizens once again, paving the way for ABBA’s well-deserved recognition.
The selection process involved public nominations followed by government review, culminating in King Carl XVI Gustaf’s final approval. The ABBA quartet joined a distinguished group of 13 exceptional Swedes honored this year. Among them were two 2023 Nobel Prize laureates: Anne L’Huillier, a French-Swedish physicist recognized for her work in physics, and Svante Pääbo, celebrated for his groundbreaking research in medicine.
The grand ceremony took place at the Royal Palace in Stockholm, where King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia personally presented the awards.
