Tampa Police Chief Lee Berca has been working tirelessly, leading the city’s efforts to prepare for Hurricane Idalia. In recent interviews, he shared his experiences with the ongoing evacuation process, the challenges faced, and the importance of heeding evacuation orders.
Describing the situation as the “Storm of the Century,” Chief Berca highlighted the massive scale of the evacuation efforts. With a population of about half a million in the city of Tampa and a total of three million in the Tampa Bay area, the evacuation process targets nearly 200,000 people in the most vulnerable areas.

The Chief emphasized that as wind speeds increase, it becomes increasingly dangerous for emergency responders to venture out. There comes a point, he stated, where he cannot, in good conscience, send his officers into harm’s way, especially when the safety of the responders themselves is at risk.
Making tough decisions is an unfortunate reality during such emergencies. Chief Berca acknowledges the difficult choice of having to prioritize the safety of his officers while recognizing the need for rescue and recovery efforts in the aftermath of the storm.
