The world was shocked to learn of a second assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump in as many months. The suspect, 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh, was apprehended near Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday, September 15th.
This incident, following closely on the heels of a previous attempt in July, has raised serious concerns about the safety and security of public figures.

According to the federal indictment, a U.S. Secret Service agent patrolling the perimeter of the golf course noticed what appeared to be a rifle barrel protruding from the treeline around 1:31 p.m. Swift action by the Secret Service agents ensured the former President’s safety, quickly moving him to a secure location. No injuries were reported.
Simultaneously, another agent discharged their weapon as Routh attempted to flee the scene. It’s important to note that Routh did not fire his weapon at any point. A witness observed Routh leaving the area in a black Nissan, providing investigators with a crucial lead – a photograph of the vehicle’s license plate.
Authorities later discovered the plates were registered to a stolen 2012 white Ford truck. Nevertheless, Routh was located and arrested approximately an hour later, 50 miles north of the golf course.
Evidence Recovered and Initial Charges

Upon securing the area, investigators discovered a cache of items near the treeline, including a digital camera, a GoPro, several bags, and a loaded AK-style rifle, presumably left behind by Routh. The affidavit revealed that the SKS-style rifle’s serial number was unreadable, having been deliberately obliterated.
Further investigation into Routh’s cell phone records indicated he had been in the vicinity of the treeline from 1:59 a.m. until 1:31 p.m. on September 15th, suggesting he had been lying in wait for almost 12 hours.
Routh’s Extensive Criminal History

A deep dive into Routh’s background exposed a long history of criminal activity. His record includes a 2022 conviction in North Carolina for possession of a weapon of mass destruction. Additional charges in North Carolina, dating back to 2010, show convictions for multiple counts of possession of stolen goods.
Routh’s encounters with law enforcement extend back to the 1990s, encompassing charges ranging from writing bad checks to hit-and-run, resisting arrest, and concealed weapons violations. In total, Routh has faced over 100 charges in North Carolina alone.
As a result of his prior felony convictions, Routh is currently facing federal charges for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number. These charges carry a combined maximum sentence of 20 years imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release.
Unraveling the Motive and the Potential for Additional Charges
To gain a deeper understanding of this complex and evolving case, we spoke with Frank Figliuzzi, author of “Long Hunt: The Highway Serial Killers” and former Assistant Director for Counterintelligence at the FBI.
Figliuzzi, drawing from his vast experience, highlighted the critical questions investigators face in such cases: who is the perpetrator, how did this happen, and why did it happen. In Routh’s case, the “who” is becoming clearer as more information comes to light. However, the “how” and “why” are still under investigation.
The discovery of the GoPro camera, potentially positioned to record the entire event, suggests a desire for notoriety or attention. The presence of ceramic plates in his backpack, offering potential protection against high-powered weapons, further supports the theory that Routh may have anticipated a confrontation with law enforcement.
Routh’s self-published book, containing controversial views and even advocating for the assassination of Donald Trump by the Iranian regime, is undoubtedly a point of interest for investigators. His social media activity, political affiliations, and potential journals or diaries will be meticulously analyzed to create a psychological profile and determine a possible motive.
Placeholder Charges and the Possibility of Attempted Assassination Charges
Figliuzzi suggests that the current charges against Routh might be “placeholder charges” while investigators build a stronger case. While serious in nature, these charges may be supplemented with more severe accusations, such as attempted assassination of a federal official or assault on a federal agent.
The Secret Service agents who bravely ran towards the perceived threat, potentially discharging their weapons to protect both themselves and the former President, could form the basis for assault charges.
Furthermore, given Routh’s status as a convicted felon, the investigation will aim to uncover the source of the firearm. Tracing the weapon’s origins and identifying the individual who provided it to Routh could lead to additional charges for that individual.
Scrutinizing the Secret Service Response and the Evolving Security Landscape
This second attempt on former President Trump’s life inevitably raises questions about the Secret Service’s security protocols. Figliuzzi, however, cautions against prematurely labeling this a “Secret Service failure.” He emphasizes the need to understand the specific security arrangements in place for what was seemingly a routine golf outing.
Figliuzzi acknowledges that the 12-hour window during which Routh remained undetected on the golf course will be subject to intense scrutiny. However, he notes that the security detail for a private golf outing differs significantly from that of a public rally. The use of drones and the extent of perimeter checks may have been adjusted accordingly.
Nonetheless, the incident underscores the increasing challenges of providing adequate security in a society saturated with firearms and grappling with mental health issues. The pervasiveness of assault-style rifles and the prevalence of open carry laws in many states complicate the task of law enforcement agencies entrusted with protecting public figures.

Figliuzzi advocates for greater transparency from the Secret Service, a traditionally insular agency. He believes that open communication and a willingness to adapt security protocols are crucial in this evolving landscape.
While acknowledging the need for heightened security measures, Figliuzzi cautions against allowing these threats to disrupt the democratic process. He suggests that a balance must be struck between ensuring the safety of candidates and allowing them to continue campaigning effectively.
