Months after federal agents raided his homes, rapper and music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs faces mounting legal battles and public scrutiny. While several high-profile lawsuits against him continue, recent developments reveal a different kind of legal battle unfolding—one between the attorneys involved.
At the heart of this new development is Tyrone Blackburn, the attorney representing several plaintiffs suing Combs. Known for his pointed and colorful language in legal filings, Blackburn has drawn attention for his aggressive approach in these cases.
Blackburn’s Legal Tactics Draw Fire
One of Blackburn’s lawsuits involves Grace Om Mary, a woman claiming assault by Combs’ son, Christian. In the filing, Blackburn refers to the younger Combs as an “autotuned and heavily edited rapper,” drawing a parallel to his father, whom he accuses of “reckless partying, drugging others, sexual violence, and other illegal conduct.”
However, Blackburn’s tactics have drawn criticism from opposing counsel and even a federal judge. Judge Denise Cote referred him to the grievance committee for allegedly filing cases in federal court to attract media attention, embarrass defendants with salacious accusations, and pressure them into quick settlements.
The Case of Rodney “Little Rod” Jones
The conflict escalated in a lawsuit filed by Rodney “Little Rod” Jones, represented by Blackburn. Jones accused Combs, his affiliated companies, and others, including actor Cuba Gooding Jr., of sexual assault, harassment, and sex trafficking.
Central to Jones’ case was the allegation that Combs and his associates operated as an illegal enterprise, violating RICO (Racketeering Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act). Jones claimed that these entities profited by coercing individuals like himself into drug and gun trafficking, soliciting minors and sex workers, and exploiting musicians.
Jones alleged that companies like Mtown Records, Universal Music Group (UMG), and UMG CEO Lucian Grainge should have been aware of and intervened in Combs’ alleged actions. However, Jones ultimately dropped the case against the UMG defendants, a move that sparked further controversy.
Blackburn Alleges Agreement Breach
In a recent court declaration, Blackburn revealed an alleged agreement with the UMG defendants’ counsel, Donald Zakarin, to drop the claims in exchange for not pursuing sanctions against Blackburn and Jones.
Sanctions, in this context, refer to monetary penalties for filing frivolous claims or abusing the legal system. Zakarin had previously sought sanctions against Blackburn and Jones under Rule 11 of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, alleging that the lawsuit lacked merit and was intended to harass and defame the defendants.
Blackburn’s Explanation for Dropping Claims
Blackburn, however, claims he agreed to dismiss the claims against UMG based on new findings. According to Blackburn, extensive research into Combs’ alleged signature on a contract between Love Records, Combs, and Mtown revealed inconsistencies.
Blackburn asserts that a handwriting expert cast doubt on the authenticity of Combs’ signature, leading Jones to believe that Mtown and UMG might have been victims of fraud perpetrated by Combs. Therefore, holding them liable for Combs’ alleged actions would be inappropriate.
Accusations Fly Between Attorneys
Blackburn accuses Zakarin of reneging on their agreement by filing a revised sanctions motion despite the dismissal of claims against UMG. He claims Zakarin disguised the motion under a different statute but retained its essence.
Zakarin, in turn, argues that Blackburn filed the initial complaints, replete with “offensively false accusations,” without proper factual or legal grounds. He contends that Blackburn prioritizes sensationalism and personal gain over ethical legal practice.
The back-and-forth between the attorneys escalated, with both parties accusing each other of unethical conduct, dishonesty, and prioritizing media attention over their clients’ best interests.
The Stakes: Combs’ Credibility and Potential Criminal Charges

Adding to the controversy is a video published by CNN, allegedly showing Combs physically assaulting his ex-girlfriend, Cassandra Ventura, in a hotel elevator in 2016. The disturbing footage prompted widespread condemnation and further tarnished Combs’ public image.
Combs issued a public apology on Instagram, but many found it inadequate and insincere. His subsequent decision to delete his entire Instagram account, including the apology, only fueled further speculation and criticism.
