Just as the snake’s promise of gratitude turned into a venomous bite, so too can succumbing to temptation lead to spiritual harm. This is precisely the challenge Nehemiah faced in the book of Nehemiah chapter 6. He wasn’t just facing one “rattlesnake,” but three: Sanballat, Tobiah, and Geshem, who were determined to undermine his work rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem. Their tactics, ranging from discouragement and ridicule to enticement and manipulation, highlight the seductive nature of compromise. Satan often dangles appealing prospects – success, popularity, the easy way out – to lure us away from God’s path.
The Allure of Ono: A Lesson in Discernment
As the wall neared completion, Sanballat and his cohorts invited Nehemiah to meet on the plains of Ono, a beautiful valley halfway between Jerusalem and Samaria. This seemingly innocent invitation was a carefully crafted trap. Ono, with its resort-like atmosphere, offered a tempting respite from Nehemiah’s arduous labors. The suggestion to “meet halfway” implied compromise, a blurring of the lines between God’s work and the world’s ways. Nehemiah, however, recognized the danger, responding with a resounding “Oh no!” to Ono.
