The Las Vegas Raiders, under new head coach and former linebacker Antonio Pierce, are expected to prioritize bolstering their linebacker corps. Heading into the 2024 season, the Raiders could significantly benefit from adding a proven talent to their linebacker group. Pro Football Focus analyst Brad Spielberger suggests that Tampa Bay Buccaneers star Devin White could be an ideal fit for the Silver and Black.
White, despite a slightly less statistically dominant 2023 season compared to previous years, still recorded 83 tackles, 2.5 sacks, two interceptions, and six passes defended in 14 games. While these numbers might represent a dip in production for the former Pro Bowler, they still showcase his versatility and impact on the field.
The 26-year-old White, a former LSU standout, entered the NFL as the fifth overall pick in the 2019 draft by the Buccaneers. He immediately made an impact, registering 91 tackles, 2.5 sacks, an interception, three forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, and two defensive touchdowns during his impressive rookie campaign.
His sophomore season was even more remarkable, as White amassed 140 tackles, nine sacks, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. Despite these eye-popping numbers, he narrowly missed the Pro Bowl but earned a well-deserved Second-Team All-Pro selection. White finally achieved Pro Bowl recognition in 2021, adding to his impressive resume with 128 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and a fumble recovery. He maintained a similar level of performance in 2022, accumulating 124 tackles, 5.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, and five passes defended.
A key factor that makes White a particularly intriguing option for the Raiders is his prior connection with Raiders linebackers coach Mike Caldwell. Caldwell served as Tampa Bay’s inside linebackers coach during White’s first three seasons, providing valuable familiarity and a potential seamless transition into the Raiders’ defensive scheme.
Furthermore, the Buccaneers’ financial commitments to key players like wide receiver Mike Evans and potentially quarterback Baker Mayfield might limit their ability to re-sign White. This scenario could create a prime opportunity for the Raiders to acquire the talented linebacker. The combination of White’s talent, his existing relationship with Coach Caldwell, and the Buccaneers’ potential salary cap constraints makes Las Vegas a logical landing spot. Whether the Raiders ultimately pursue White remains to be seen, but his addition would undoubtedly strengthen their defense and elevate their competitiveness in the AFC West.
