Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow expressed confidence in wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase’s readiness for Week 1, despite a recent contract dispute that kept Chase away from training camp. Chase returned to practice on Wednesday, ensuring his presence for the season opener against the New England Patriots.
“Great to have him back. Great player. A guy that we need to be our best,” Burrow stated, according to the Bengals’ official X account.
Chase’s return to practice ends a holdout stemming from his desire for a contract extension. While he’s under contract through 2025, Chase sought long-term security, especially considering recent lucrative deals signed by other wide receivers.
While understandable, Chase’s absence from training camp raised concerns about his preparedness for the upcoming season, a crucial element in the Bengals’ Super Bowl aspirations.
The Bengals’ success hinges heavily on the elite performance of Ja’Marr Chase. He is an integral part of Cincinnati’s offense, serving as Burrow’s primary target. Their potent connection, honed since their college days at LSU, has translated seamlessly to the NFL.
Since being drafted fifth overall in 2021, Chase has earned three Pro Bowl selections. In 2023, he recorded 100 receptions for 1,216 yards and seven touchdowns in 16 games. His rookie season was even more impressive, with 81 receptions for 1,455 yards and 13 touchdowns in all 17 games. Even in a slightly injury-shortened 2022 season, Chase managed 87 receptions for 1,046 yards and nine touchdowns in 12 games.
Chase and Tee Higgins form one of the league’s most formidable receiving duos. However, Higgins is potentially entering his final year with the team, adding further importance to Chase’s performance.
The Bengals’ high-powered offense relies on Chase’s exceptional abilities. For the team to contend for a Super Bowl, Chase needs to be at his peak, echoing Burrow’s sentiments. However, whether Chase is in optimal game shape after missing training camp remains to be seen.
The Bengals’ 9-8 record and missed playoffs last season were largely attributed to Burrow’s wrist injury that sidelined him for a significant portion of the year. This underscores the importance of a healthy and productive Burrow-Chase partnership for the team’s success in 2024. A strong start against the Patriots in Week 1 will be crucial in setting the tone for the season.
