The Houston Texans have made significant roster changes this offseason, including the acquisition of running back Joe Mixon. While the trade was somewhat overshadowed by the arrival of star wide receiver Stefon Diggs, it represents a potentially valuable addition to the Texans’ offense.
General Manager Nick Caserio recently shed light on the circumstances surrounding the Mixon trade, explaining how the Texans managed to acquire the former Pro Bowler from the Cincinnati Bengals. Caserio revealed that Mixon was on the verge of being released by the Bengals. This presented an opportunity for the Texans to add a proven running back at a minimal cost.
“Joe was set to be released,” Caserio stated, according to Christian Gonzales of NFL.com. “He was a player that we evaluated, and we thought could help our team in some capacity.” Caserio further detailed the trade negotiations: “You get on the phone, talk to the team. ‘Hey, we’d be interested. Would you guys be willing to give up a pick, or if we gave up a pick would you be interested?’ That’s kind of how the trade was consummated.”
The Texans ultimately secured Mixon in exchange for a seventh-round draft pick, a remarkably low price for a player of his caliber. Caserio expressed confidence in Mixon’s abilities and his potential contribution to the team. “Joe has been a productive player, pretty consistent player, and we think he can help our team,” Caserio affirmed. “We’re glad he’s here hopefully for a few more years.”
In the 2023 season, Mixon demonstrated his durability and productivity, playing in all 17 games and accumulating 1,034 rushing yards and nine touchdowns. He also showcased his versatility as a receiver, catching 52 passes for 376 yards and three touchdowns.
Drafted by the Bengals in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft, the 27-year-old spent his first six seasons in Cincinnati. His most impressive season came in 2018 when he rushed for 1,168 yards and eight touchdowns, averaging an impressive 4.9 yards per carry. Mixon earned Pro Bowl honors in 2021, rushing for 1,205 yards and 13 touchdowns.
While Mixon has recorded four seasons with over 1,000 rushing yards, his efficiency has dipped in recent years. Over the past five seasons, he hasn’t averaged more than 4.1 yards per carry and has twice finished below four yards per attempt.
The Texans are hoping that a change of scenery and a fresh start will revitalize Mixon’s career. His performance in the upcoming 2024 season will be crucial in determining the success of the trade for both the Texans and Mixon himself.
