The Denver Broncos’ 2024 offseason was marked by significant offensive changes, most notably the release of quarterback Russell Wilson and the subsequent acquisition of Zach Wilson and drafting of Bo Nix. However, questions linger about the team’s receiving corps after trading Jerry Jeudy and with Courtland Sutton’s future uncertain due to contract negotiations.
This uncertainty has fueled trade speculation surrounding Sutton. Denver Sports host Rachel Vigil recently proposed a blockbuster trade to editor James Merilatt, suggesting the Broncos pursue San Francisco 49ers star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. The proposed trade package would include Sutton and second-round picks in both 2025 and 2026.
Merilatt believes Broncos General Manager George Paton would likely accept this trade, citing Aiyuk as a proven “difference maker” who could instantly elevate the Broncos’ offense.
“Brandon Aiyuk’s a player,” Merilatt stated on the “Coffee Break” podcast. “He’s a difference maker and this team has no one on offense who is right now a difference maker…He’s a household name in the NFL. He’d be the best player on their offense, the second-best player on the team the day he walked in the building.” Merilatt further argued that Aiyuk is a significant upgrade over Sutton.
Aiyuk is coming off a career-best season in 2023, recording 75 receptions for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns. He demonstrated his ability to excel as the 49ers’ primary receiving option when Deebo Samuel was injured.
While the 49ers recognize Aiyuk’s talent, they may face challenges in meeting his contract demands. The proposed trade package, though lacking a first-round pick, offers the 49ers a starting-caliber receiver in Sutton and two valuable second-round picks. This could be a mutually beneficial deal, addressing both teams’ needs at the wide receiver position. The Broncos would gain a proven number one receiver, while the 49ers would acquire draft capital and potentially alleviate future salary cap constraints.
