A Close Call: Elderly Driver Narrowly Avoids Serious Accident in Sebrite, New Jersey

In a series of events that could have easily turned tragic, a routine traffic stop in Sebrite, New Jersey, quickly escalated into a chaotic scene involving a suspected drunk driver. The incident, which unfolded after 10 p.m., began with a police officer pulling over a driver for illegal window tinting and an obstructed license plate.

As the officer was about to let the first driver go with a warning, another vehicle sped past and collided with a nearby parked police cruiser. Fortunately, the officer who was inside the cruiser at the time of the impact was unharmed.

The dramatic crash was captured on the officer’s dash camera, showing the suspect’s car driving past at a high speed, causing the police cruiser to shake violently. The officer immediately pursued the suspect, eventually pulling over the driver, identified as 74-year-old Catherine Zola.

Upon questioning, Ms. Zola admitted to having had two vodka sodas earlier in the evening. Officers suspected she was intoxicated and administered several field sobriety tests, which she failed to perform satisfactorily.

Ms. Zola was subsequently arrested and charged with driving under the influence (DUI), reckless driving, careless driving, and leaving the scene of an accident. She later pleaded guilty to the DUI charge, while the other charges were dismissed.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of drunk driving, even at low speeds and in seemingly safe environments. Thankfully, no one sustained serious injuries in this instance.
