The untimely death of singer Aaron Carter, found dead in a bathtub at his Los Angeles home last November, continues to generate controversy. While initial reports suggested a possible drowning, TMZ later revealed that the LA County coroner found no water in Carter’s lungs, ruling out that possibility.
Adding to the uncertainty, Carter’s mother, Jane Schneck, has publicly questioned the official investigation. She took to Facebook to share photos of the bathroom where her son was found, expressing her belief that the police, due to Carter’s history of mental health issues and prescription drug use, were too quick to dismiss the case as an accidental overdose.

Schneck, who believes her son was the target of threats and potential harm, is calling for a more thorough investigation. To shed light on the complexities of the case, we spoke with Joseph Scott Morgan, a renowned forensic death investigator and host of the “Body Bags” podcast.
Unanswered Questions and the Importance of a Complete Autopsy
Morgan emphasizes the significance of the pending toxicology results, which are crucial for determining the presence and quantity of substances in Carter’s system. These tests, he explains, are essential for understanding the role of potential drug use in his death.
While acknowledging Carter’s known history of substance abuse, Morgan cautions against premature conclusions. A comprehensive examination of both qualitative and quantitative data is necessary to establish a definitive cause of death.
“It takes time to analyze all of this and not just look for what we refer to as qualitative results but quantitative results,” Morgan says. “The mother has already stated that he’s got a history of drug abuse… however you… it’s not going to be surprising to find things in the system, but exactly how much is there? That’s where we turn to quantitative and that takes time.”
Morgan explains that a complete autopsy, including an examination of organs and tissues, is critical in cases like this. This allows investigators to identify any underlying medical conditions or signs of unnatural occurrences that may have contributed to Carter’s death.

“In the medical legal community, you have to go through all of these various steps,” he states. “So we could say at this point in time that the exam is incomplete right now.”
The Impact of Celebrity and Family Denial
Morgan acknowledges the added pressure and scrutiny that celebrity cases like Aaron Carter’s bring. The intense public interest, he notes, can complicate the investigative process for law enforcement and medical professionals.
“There’s the element of celebrity here and that that cannot be discounted and that makes it that makes it… doubly difficult for the medical legal community because they’ve got more eyes on it… than say if you were in some other locale where you had… a regular citizen that had died,” Morgan observes.
He also highlights the sensitive issue of family denial, which often arises in cases of unexpected or traumatic death. The emotional toll, he says, can lead loved ones to reject certain outcomes and seek alternative explanations, even in the absence of concrete evidence.
“If you suggest something to the family members, particularly when it comes to unpleasant… conclusions, like drug OD, in cases of suicide, you see it a lot where families, they just don’t believe it. They want to look for some other solution,” Morgan says.
The Path Forward: Evidence, Investigation, and Closure
Morgan stresses the importance of Schneck directly communicating any specific information or evidence that supports her belief of homicide to the police. Vague allegations, he cautions, are unlikely to move the investigation forward.
He also acknowledges the limitations posed by the cremation of Carter’s body, which eliminates the possibility of an independent autopsy. However, Morgan notes that valuable evidence, including tissue samples, toxicology reports, and photographs, can still be analyzed to gain further insight into the circumstances surrounding Carter’s death.
As the investigation continues, the world awaits the release of the final autopsy report and the answers it may hold. The hope is that a thorough and impartial examination of the evidence will ultimately bring closure to Aaron Carter’s loved ones and fans, providing a clearer understanding of the tragedy that cut his life short.
