He emphasized his commitment to sobriety, stating that chapter of his life was closed. However, the intense touring schedule and the pressure of being in a constantly evolving band contributed to his need for change.
“I was in a really dark place,” Gontier reflects, “Emotionally, physically, and spiritually, I was just not healthy.” The relentless touring and compounding personal issues led him to the difficult decision to prioritize his well-being. Leaving felt like escaping a “giant machine,” he admits, acknowledging the exit could have been handled more gracefully. His focus at the time was solely on his own needs.

During his time away from Three Days Grace, Gontier fronted Saint Asonia and welcomed his first child in 2017. Fatherhood, he reveals, became the catalyst for his sustained sobriety. Shifting his focus from personal needs to the responsibilities of being a parent transformed his perspective and priorities. The birth of his second child further solidified this change, grounding him in the present.
Maintaining sobriety is a daily commitment, Gontier acknowledges. He credits surrounding himself with supportive people and fostering a healthy environment as crucial factors in his continued recovery. It’s a conscious choice he makes each day.
The reunion with Three Days Grace began during the pandemic. Founding member and bassist, Brad Walst, reconnected with Gontier and proposed his return as co-lead singer alongside Matt Walst, Brad’s younger brother who had replaced Gontier in 2013. The transition back into the band has been remarkably smooth, Gontier says. The shared history and tight bond forged during their formative years have enabled a natural collaboration.

“We’ve checked all our egos at the door,” Gontier emphasizes. The focus is on creating the best possible music and delivering electrifying performances. The band is currently working on a new album, promising their signature “angsty, riffy, heavy vibe” while also exploring new musical avenues. Having two lead vocalists allows for greater creative flexibility, experimenting with melodies and expanding their sonic landscape.
The band released their first single with Gontier back in the lineup, “Mayday,” in November 2024. They are set to embark on a US tour starting in February 2025. The return of Adam Gontier marks a new era for Three Days Grace, one filled with promise, renewed energy, and the potential for even greater musical heights. This reunion is a testament to the power of personal growth, second chances, and the enduring bonds of friendship and shared creative vision.
