Anthony Mackie’s New Orleans Roots: Balancing Hollywood and Hometown

Anthony Mackie, the star of Captain America: Brave New World, has a deep connection to his hometown of New Orleans. In a 2025 Esquire cover story, the 46-year-old actor discussed his decision to leave Hollywood and return to his roots in 2008 after a day of fishing with friends and golfing with his uncle.

Mackie admitted that moving back to New Orleans impacted his career trajectory. “Moving to New Orleans slowed my career in a way,” he explained. “But it also gave me the peace of mind and the confidence, being outside of the business, that I can bring a natural humanity into my roles and the things that I do.”

The move has also allowed Mackie to film projects closer to home. Both the 2023 Netflix thriller We Have a Ghost and the Peacock series Twisted Metal, released in the same year, were filmed in New Orleans. This demonstrates Mackie’s commitment to his community and his desire to contribute to its economic and cultural landscape.

Stephanie Beatriz, Mackie’s Twisted Metal co-star, shared with Esquire that Mackie’s love for New Orleans was evident on set. “Anthony is a real caretaker on set. He is constantly checking in on the crew,” she commented. Beatriz further emphasized Mackie’s dedication to the things he loves, citing his care for the crew as an extension of his passion for New Orleans. She compared him to other actors known for their caring nature, such as Andre Gower and Ted Danson.

Beyond his professional life, Mackie prioritizes his family life as a father of four sons with his ex-wife, Sheletta Chapital. He consciously shields his children from the spotlight, striving to maintain a sense of normalcy for them. “[I’ve always kept my personal life out of the business. I don’t allow people to photograph my kids. I don’t bring my kids around,” Mackie stated. “I want my kids to be normal.”
