We are back on a Saturday morning and as the world mourns the loss of Queen Elizabeth, it’s not just folks across the pond who love the queen and the royal family. It’s many Americans as well. Why do you think we’re all so fascinated by the Royals?
Isn’t that so funny considering we had a revolution about this very thing, but now Americans in our modern culture are just fascinated with the Royals? There are a lot of Americans in this crowd behind me. In fact, there’s one right there. Say hi from Virginia, there she is. I’ve met a lot of people who are here on trips and are stopping by to pay their respects to the queen. And I, I sort of smile when I say this, but you know I started watching “The Crown” and I have to tell you, on a serious note, it made me really understand at a deeper level the weight of the responsibility and the role of the duty that the Monarch plays. And I, you know, it’s, I laugh a little bit about it because I’m not sure the Royals love “The Crown.” I’m not sure they think it’s totally accurate, but on this point, it is that when you talk about service and sacrifice, there’s certainly an element of that. You know, Queen Elizabeth may have wanted to live a very different life. Maybe she wanted to be a country girl and live an anonymous life, but that was not ordained for her and she stepped up to her duty. And I think that is why people feel this love and affection for her. This was not the life she chose, but when it was thrust upon her, she certainly rose to the occasion.
Yeah, Savannah, I think you’re absolutely right. This ancient construct, and yet so many human stories evolving within it. Savannah, thank you so much for that.
