Brie Larson Embraces a Buzz Cut for London’s “Elektra”

Academy Award winner Brie Larson, 35, recently revealed a dramatic buzz cut in preparation for her role in Sophocles’ Elektra at London’s Duke of York’s Theatre. Larson shared a behind-the-scenes video on Instagram and YouTube, offering a glimpse into the intensive rehearsal process and her commitment to the role. The video showcases Larson in a theater dressing room, makeup-free, discussing the unique aspects of the production.

This isn’t the first time Larson has transformed her hair for a role. In November 2024, she debuted a pixie cut with a darker brunette shade, a significant change from her signature long, blonde waves. However, the buzz cut represents an even bolder departure for the Captain Marvel star.

Larson described the Elektra experience as “special and energizing,” highlighting the collaborative effort in building the show “from the ground up.” The production, directed by Daniel Fish, is a contemporary take on the classic Greek tragedy, focusing on a woman consumed by vengeance for her father’s murder. The play utilizes a minimalist set design, featuring elements like a blimp and a revolving stage, to emphasize the actors’ performances.

The play had a pre-run at the Theatre Royal Brighton in January before transferring to the Duke of York’s Theatre for previews starting January 24th and officially opening on February 5th. The London run is scheduled to conclude on April 12th. Larson expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with a talented cast and creative team, emphasizing the transformative nature of the experience.

In the video, Larson elaborated on the production’s unique approach. She explained that the minimalist setting, devoid of specific locations, honors the original Greek tragedies while allowing contemporary elements to enhance the storytelling. The stripped-back aesthetic, she noted, demands greater thoughtfulness and intentionality in every aspect of the performance.

Larson also discussed the significance of the music in setting the production apart. She highlighted the show’s themes of challenging perceptions and empowering women. The role, she explained, allows her to embody a woman who unapologetically expresses her pain, anger, and selfhood, demanding to be heard by the audience. Larson stars alongside Stockard Channing, Marième Diouf, Greg Hicks, and Patrick Vaill in this highly anticipated revival. Larson described the empowering feeling of portraying a strong female character who refuses to silence her voice.
