Claypool entered the NFL with high expectations after a standout collegiate career at Notre Dame. The Pittsburgh Steelers selected him in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. His rookie season was impressive, showcasing his potential with 62 receptions for 873 yards and nine touchdowns. He appeared in every game, quickly establishing himself as a key offensive weapon.
However, Claypool’s performance plateaued in the following season. While he played in 15 games, his numbers remained relatively stagnant with 59 catches for 860 yards and only two touchdowns. Concerns about his attitude and consistency began to surface within the Steelers organization.
Despite giving Claypool another opportunity in 2022, the Steelers ultimately traded him to the Chicago Bears mid-season after eight games where he recorded 32 receptions for 311 yards and one touchdown. His time in Chicago proved uneventful, with a minimal impact in seven games (14 receptions for 140 yards).
The Bills are betting on Claypool’s physical attributes and untapped potential. At 6-foot-4 and around 240 pounds, he possesses the size and speed (4.42-second 40-yard dash in college) to be a dominant receiver. The departure of Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis creates an opportunity for Claypool to earn a significant role in the Bills’ offense.
