Carrie Bradshaw’s Iconic Stoop to Get a Gate, Deterring ‘Sex and the City’ Fans

Fans flocking to Carrie Bradshaw’s famous stoop at 66 Perry Street in New York City, a key location in “Sex and the City” and its reboot “And Just Like That…”, may soon face a new hurdle. The Landmarks Preservation Commission recently approved the homeowner’s request to install a gate, aiming to curb the constant influx of tourists.

The Greenwich Village brownstone served as the exterior for Carrie’s Upper East Side apartment throughout the original HBO series and the Max revival. The show’s enduring popularity has transformed the address into a global tourist hotspot, drawing crowds for over two decades.

Homeowner Barbara Lorber described the situation in her application, stating her residence had become a “global tourist destination.” For years, a chain and “No Trespassing” sign, installed at the police’s suggestion, have attempted to deter visitors. However, these measures proved insufficient to stop dedicated fans from climbing the steps, posing for photos, and even attempting to enter the building. Lorber’s statement detailed instances of fans climbing over the chain, lying on the steps, peering into windows, attempting to open the front door, ringing doorbells late at night, and even instances of graffiti and vandalism.

Lorber recounted how she initially agreed to let the show use her home out of sympathy for a young location scout, Tyson Bidner, who claimed it was crucial for his career. Bidner, now an executive producer on “The Bear,” confirmed the story’s accuracy, acknowledging the importance of 66 Perry Street to “Sex and the City.” Former location scout Rob Striem expressed sympathy for Lorber, recalling the difficulties of repeatedly filming at the location.

Despite her affection for the building’s historical significance, Lorber argued that the iconic stoop requires modern protection from overzealous fans. While lamenting the need for a gate, she expressed to the Landmarks Preservation Commission that the building needs increased security in the 21st century.

Interestingly, “And Just Like That…” concluded its second season with Carrie moving to a new Gramercy Park residence. However, the series hasn’t entirely abandoned 66 Perry Street. The show’s official Instagram recently posted a photo of Parker filming Season 3 outside the building, confirming its continued relevance in the “Sex and the City” universe. The post indicated a 2025 release for the new season, leaving fans eager to see how the iconic stoop will be featured.
