Dr. Steven Matthews, a Denver cardiologist, has been accused of drugging and raping numerous women he met on dating apps. Allegations of a Serial Predator
Dr. Matthews, 36, allegedly matched with women on dating apps and, after gaining their trust, would slip something into their drinks during dates. Many victims reported experiencing blackouts, disorientation, and violent illness, with some claiming to have been sexually assaulted.
Berg’s clients describe similar experiences – meeting Dr. Matthews at a public place, feeling comfortable enough to accompany him back to his home, and then experiencing a lapse in memory after having a drink. The alleged victims, many of whom are experienced drinkers, found themselves questioning their own actions and struggling with self-blame.
The alleged crimes came to light after one brave survivor came forward, prompting others to share their stories. The collective courage of these women has been crucial in exposing the alleged pattern of abuse.
Legal Proceedings and Potential Lawsuit
Dr. Matthews is currently facing 51 felony counts related to drugging and raping 13 women. He has pleaded not guilty, and his criminal trial is scheduled to begin on March 4th, 2024. While he awaits trial, Dr. Matthews has agreed to suspend his medical license.
Berg and his legal team are preparing to file lawsuits against Match Group, the parent company of dating apps like Hinge and Tinder, following the conclusion of the criminal case. The lawsuit will focus on Match Group’s alleged failure to remove Dr. Matthews from their platforms despite receiving a report of his alleged actions from a survivor years prior.
Match Group claims to prioritize user safety and employ various measures to prevent bad actors from using their platforms. However, Berg argues that their inaction in this case directly contradicts their claims and highlights a systemic problem within the company.
Call for Change and Increased Safety Measures
Berg believes that the potential lawsuits against Match Group are not just about seeking justice for the victims but also about driving change within the online dating industry. He advocates for stricter regulations and safety measures to protect users from potential predators.
