The Indianapolis Colts have solidified their defense by signing linebacker Zaire Franklin to a three-year contract extension worth $31.26 million. This move underscores Franklin’s importance to the team following significant changes to the linebacker corps under head coach Shane Steichen.
The Colts’ linebacker position has undergone a transformation since Steichen’s arrival. The team lost Bobby Okereke to the New York Giants in free agency and released former All-Pro Shaquille Leonard mid-season due to scheme fit concerns and diminished playing time. Amidst this restructuring, Franklin emerged as a key contributor.
In 2022, with Leonard sidelined due to injury, Franklin seized the opportunity, starting 17 games and racking up 167 tackles and 3.0 sacks. He continued to excel in 2023, starting 16 games and recording a career-high 179 tackles, along with 1.5 sacks, six passes defended, and two forced fumbles. His consistent presence on the field, playing 99% of defensive snaps in 2023 after playing 100% in 2022, highlights his durability and value to the Colts’ defense.
Recognizing Franklin’s crucial role, the Colts prioritized securing him long-term. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the three-year extension, which was subsequently confirmed by Franklin’s agents, Drew Rosenhaus and Kyle Lincoln. The deal amounts to $31.26 million, solidifying Franklin’s place in Indianapolis.
While Franklin’s Pro Football Focus grade ranked him 59th out of 82 qualified linebackers in 2023, his on-field impact and leadership are undeniable. He stepped up when the Colts needed him most and has consistently delivered strong performances since earning a starting role.
With Franklin’s contract extension finalized, the Colts can now shift their focus to other pressing matters. Securing a long-term deal with wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr., who received the franchise tag earlier this offseason, is likely a top priority for the team moving forward.
