Deshaun Watson’s Take on Justin Fields’ Trade to the Steelers

Deshaun Watson’s Take on Justin Fields’ Trade to the Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers recently acquired quarterback Justin Fields from the Chicago Bears, a move that Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson openly questioned on his QB Unplugged podcast. Watson’s confusion stemmed from a mistaken belief that the Steelers had already signed Russell Wilson.

“From a conservative standpoint, I thought Russell would be better,” Watson stated. He suggested a quarterback competition, but acknowledged the Steelers’ decision to go with Wilson. “If he’s the guy, I think Justin could have found a better situation to play.”

However, limited options likely led to the Bears trading Fields to Pittsburgh for a sixth-round pick. Bears General Manager Ryan Poles emphasized the team’s desire to do right by Fields, implying that the trade aligned with the quarterback’s wishes.

Fields’ potential starting opportunity arises from Wilson’s age (35) and one-year contract with Pittsburgh. Wilson’s performance during his two seasons with the Denver Broncos raises the possibility of Fields taking over as starter next season.

The Ohio State product, drafted 11th overall by the Bears in 2021, has demonstrated flashes of brilliance but struggled with inconsistency, reflected in his 10-28 record as a starter.

Fields showed promise in 2023 with eight touchdowns and one interception between Weeks 4 and 5 before a thumb dislocation sidelined him for four games. He finished the season with 2,562 passing yards, 16 touchdowns, nine interceptions, a 61.4% completion rate, and an 86.3 passer rating. He also contributed 657 rushing yards and four touchdowns.

Ultimately, Watson might be better served focusing on his own position in Cleveland rather than Fields’ situation in Pittsburgh. Fields’ move to the Steelers presents a fresh start and a potential opportunity to prove his capabilities under new leadership. Whether he can capitalize on this chance remains to be seen.
