A Brief Overview of Ong Met Pagoda

Ong Met Pagoda, situated on Le Loi street in Ward 1, Tra Vinh, is recognized as the oldest temple in the region, with its establishment dating back to 642 AD. According to Venerable Thach Oai, the abbot and Vice Chairman of the Tra Vinh Provincial Council of Patriotic Monks, this pagoda has deep historical roots. Originally known as Wat Kompong—meaning “The Wharf Pagoda” due to its proximity to the river and landing dock—the temple was later renamed Bodhisàlaraja, symbolizing the “Bodhi tree,” which represents enlightenment.

The diverse meaning embedded in its name reflects the temple’s architectural grandeur, suggesting that the statue of Buddha here is crafted from the most exquisite Sala wood, symbolizing the everlasting life of the local people.

The Cultural Importance of Ong Met Pagoda

Strategically located at the center of Tra Vinh city, Ong Met Pagoda serves not only as a large temple but also as a significant center for Khmer Buddhism in the province. It connects various Khmer temples across the province and the Mekong Delta region, positioning it as a hub for the Khmer Buddhist community. The temple even hosts the office of the Mahanikay sect’s Khmer Buddhist Administration.

As an important training ground for numerous generations of monks, Ong Met Pagoda has played a pivotal role in the growth of Buddhism and the preservation of Khmer cultural heritage. Its significance was officially recognized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, which declared it a national historical and cultural site and acknowledged its unique architectural designs in 2009.

The Legendary Origins of Ong Met Pagoda

According to ancient legends, the area encompassing wards 3 and 4 in Tra Vinh was once a vast swamp, reminiscent of a large pond, while wards 1 and 2 had dry land settled by local inhabitants. In a fateful night of meditation, a monk from a nearby temple saw a holy figure who informed him of a wooden Buddha statue rising from the murky waters. To retrieve the statue, it could only be pulled with seven colored threads.

The next morning, to the monk’s surprise, a majestic wooden statue was found by the waterside. However, as they commenced the retrieval, the threads broke near the sacred Bodhi tree, halting their progress. Realizing this was a divine sign, the monk chose to build a pagoda at that very spot to honor the statue, giving birth to the Bodhisàlaraja temple.
