This article delves into two disturbing cases involving educators in Michigan and Texas who have been accused of engaging in inappropriate relationships with students. The incidents highlight a serious issue within the education system and emphasize the importance of student safety and well-being.
Former Michigan School Employee Accused of Sending Inappropriate Messages to a Minor
In a shocking turn of events, 79-year-old Susan Ash, a former paraprofessional at Calcasa Middle School in Michigan, turned herself in to the authorities on a felony warrant. The charge? Accosting children for immoral purposes.
State troopers revealed that they had been alerted in September about a woman allegedly sending inappropriate text messages and Snapchat messages to a minor. This was the same month Ash retired from her position at the middle school.
Details regarding the age of the victim and the content of the messages have not been disclosed by the authorities. However, it has been confirmed that the victim knew Ash.
As part of the investigation, search warrants were executed at Ash’s residence, and multiple electronic devices were seized. These devices have been sent to the Michigan State Police computer crimes unit for a thorough analysis. Based on their findings, a warrant for Ash’s arrest was issued on January 8th.
Texas Math Teacher Charged with Inappropriate Relationship with Student
In a separate incident, 30-year-old Leslie Renee James, a former math teacher at Shoemaker High School in Texas, faces charges for an inappropriate relationship with an 18-year-old male student.

According to reports, James allegedly invited the student to her home, where they engaged in sexual contact. Detectives from the Special Victims Unit received a complaint about the incident on November 16th.
The investigation is ongoing, and information regarding the frequency of their encounters and when the alleged abuse began remains unclear.
The Psychological Aspect of Educator-Student Abuse
Dr. John Delatori, a psychologist, provided insights into the complexities of such cases. He stressed that abusers can be found in all age groups and that the 79-year-old former school employee might be an outlier.
Delatori explained that abusers often exhibit low self-esteem and seek connections with children because they perceive them as the only ones they can relate to.
“They have these sort of false relationships right they believe that these things are much more intimate than what they actually are or they believe that the child is able to you know engage in seductive kinds of behaviors right that they’re able to consent into into sexual relationships,” Delatori said.
He added that power dynamics play a significant role in these situations. Abusers may target children as they perceive them as easy to control and manipulate.
The Impact of Technology on Detecting Abuse
Dr. Delatori also pointed out that such abuse cases have always existed, but the digital footprint left behind in today’s world makes it harder to conceal.
“The evidence that’s left behind is now electronic right you’re all it’s never going anywhere right once it’s out there in the ether it’s never going to be deleted and I think that’s why we’re seeing it caught as often as we are is because it’s very hard to delete electronic trails” Delatori explained.
This underscores the critical role technology plays in uncovering and addressing such heinous acts.
The Importance of Open Communication and Support for Victims
Addressing the impact on the victims, Dr. Delatori emphasized that while children are resilient, therapy can provide valuable support in processing the trauma. He urged parents to foster open communication with their children, creating a safe space for them to share their experiences without fear of judgment.
These deeply concerning cases serve as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding students and holding those in positions of authority accountable for their actions.
