Emma Stone, 36, surprised fans with a new pixie cut at the 2025 Golden Globes on January 5th. The dramatic hair transformation, speculated to be for her role in Yorgos Lanthimos’ film Bugonia, was a major talking point of the evening. Stone, who wore a striking red gown, showcased a short pixie cut with slight growth, indicating a recent head shave.

Rumors of Stone’s dramatic haircut began circulating in October when she was spotted filming Bugonia in New York. Photos from the set showed Stone consistently wearing a hat, fueling speculation about a significant hair change for the role. This is Stone’s fourth collaboration with Lanthimos, following The Favourite, Poor Things, and Kinds of Kindness. A clip from the New York Film Festival further intensified the rumors, as Stone appeared to be adjusting what looked like a wig atop her signature red hair.

Stone’s new darker copper hair color was created by Tracey Cunningham, Schwarzkopf Professional’s U.S. Creative Director of Color & Technique. Cunningham used Schwarzkopf Professional’s IGORA VIBRANCE Demi-Permanent Color Line to achieve the rich shade and added a gloss for extra shine. This isn’t the first time Stone has experimented with her hair. She even entrusted her Kinds of Kindness co-star, Joe Alwyn, to cut her ponytail for the film.

The Golden Globes marked Stone’s first major public appearance since filming Bugonia. While not nominated this year, she attended as the reigning winner for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for her role in Poor Things. This year’s nominees in that category included Amy Adams, Cynthia Erivo, Karla Sofía Gascón, Mikey Madison, Demi Moore, and Zendaya. Stone previously won a Golden Globe in 2017 for La La Land and has received six other nominations throughout her career. Bugonia is scheduled for release on November 7th.
