In an exclusive interview with Law Crime Network, Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon Jr. expressed his belief that Rex Heuermann is responsible for the serial murders that have plagued the jurisdiction for years.
Sheriff Toulon revealed new details in the murder case, including Heuermann’s contact with escorts while two former Suffolk County inmates narrowly escaped becoming victims themselves. The accused serial killer reportedly reached out to these individuals but did not engage in physical contact.
Rex Heuermann Charged in Gilgo Beach Murders
Last week, officials announced the arrest of 59-year-old Rex Heuermann, believed to be responsible for at least three of the Long Island serial murders dating back to 2010.
Heuermann currently faces charges in the murders of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello, all of whom worked as escorts at the time of their deaths. However, Sheriff Toulon informed Law Crime Network that Heuermann could soon face charges in the murder of an additional victim, Maureen Brainard-Barnes.
Evidence and Investigation Details
Sheriff Toulon emphasized the meticulous approach taken by the district attorney and police commissioner in building a solid case against Heuermann. He credited the multi-department task force, which included officials from the Suffolk County Police Department, Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police, and the FBI, for their tireless efforts in tracking down the suspect and gathering substantial evidence.
The sheriff highlighted the importance of collaboration among different agencies in solving complex cases like this one. He acknowledged that the initial task force established after the first sets of remains were discovered over a decade ago was disbanded, but a new task force formed in February 2022 proved instrumental in identifying Heuermann as a prime suspect.
DNA Evidence Links Heuermann to the Crimes
One of the most crucial pieces of evidence came from DNA analysis. Investigators recovered a pizza box discarded in January 2023. Subsequent analysis of a leftover crust by the Suffolk County Crime Lab connected it to Heuermann.
Additionally, hairs likely belonging to both Heuermann and his wife were found on the bodies of multiple victims. Officials confirmed that Heuermann’s wife was out of the tri-state area when several murders occurred.
Burner Phones and Suspicious Activity
Sheriff Toulon emphasized that Heuermann’s use of burner phones immediately raised red flags. Investigations revealed that Heuermann used these phones to contact sex workers, and his American Express records placed him in the same location as multiple burner phones when they were used to contact victims.
Further investigation uncovered Heuermann’s alleged involvement in sex trafficking. Two women who had previously been in contact with Heuermann were booked into the Suffolk County jail, and they provided information about his attempts to solicit them for sex trafficking.
Heuermann Remains on Suicide Watch
Since his arrest, Heuermann has been under suicide watch at the Suffolk County jail. Sheriff Toulon described Heuermann’s demeanor during his arraignment as lacking any remorse or emotion.
Justice for the Victims and Their Families
The arrest of Rex Heuermann brings a sense of relief to the Gilgo Beach community, especially the families of the victims. Sheriff Toulon assured the families that the investigation is far from over. He emphasized their commitment to pursuing justice and exploring any leads that may result in additional charges against Heuermann.
The investigation into the Gilgo Beach murders continues, and authorities urge anyone with information to come forward.
