Gronkowski specifically suggested that the Patriots should pursue Tennessee Titans backup quarterback Malik Willis. On the Up & Adams Show, Gronkowski explained his reasoning, stating, “Bring him in. Coach (Bill) Belichick loves speed…He loves a quarterback who can also run the ball.” Gronkowski highlighted Belichick’s historical appreciation for mobile quarterbacks, a quality Jones lacks.
Willis, a third-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, had a challenging rookie season. In eight appearances and three starts, he threw no touchdowns and three interceptions. However, he demonstrated his rushing ability with 123 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries, aligning with Gronkowski’s argument about Belichick’s preference for dual-threat quarterbacks.
Willis: A Potential Sleeper Pick?
Although Willis hasn’t played in 2023, Gronkowski believes he could be a viable option to challenge Jones for the starting role in New England. While Willis’ rookie year stats were underwhelming, his athleticism and potential for development might make him an attractive option for the Patriots. A change of scenery and coaching could potentially unlock Willis’ untapped potential.
