Humor Amidst Tragedy: A Baker’s Perspective on the Los Angeles Wildfires

Erin McKenna, a renowned vegan and gluten-free baker based in Los Angeles, recently experienced the devastating impact of the California wildfires firsthand when her home was destroyed. While the situation is undoubtedly tragic, McKenna found a moment of levity in her husband’s unorthodox evacuation packing choices.

In a humorous Instagram video, McKenna showcased the seemingly random assortment of items her husband prioritized when evacuating their family. These included a velvet blazer, two bras and robes for McKenna (without the sashes), a full suitcase for himself, their daughter’s play script, trophies, empty grocery bags, and all of his guitars.

Amidst the chaos, McKenna did acknowledge a few sensible choices, highlighting a stuffed bunny with a blanket and a sweatshirt as “valid” additions. While acknowledging the gravity of the situation, she couldn’t help but find humor in the absurdity of the remaining items. Her Instagram caption expressed her heartache while also praising her husband as a hero for ensuring the safe and swift evacuation of their children and dog. She also expressed gratitude for the robes.

The wildfires, fueled by strong winds and dry vegetation, have ravaged Los Angeles since their ignition a week prior. Containment efforts have been significantly hampered by a high wind event, further escalating the crisis.

Numerous residents, including several celebrities, have been forced to evacuate their homes, with some facing the devastating loss of their properties entirely. Among those affected are Adam Brody and Leighton Meester, Anna Faris, Cobie Smulders and Taran Killam, John Goodman, Jamie Chung and Bryan Greenberg, and Jennifer Grey.
