A Knife-Wielding Man and a Tense Standoff in a Denver Whole Foods
On the evening of September 19th, an off-duty police officer enjoying his time off at a Whole Foods Market in Denver found himself thrust into a volatile situation. The officer observed a man, later identified as 33-year-old Latif Robinson, acting erratically inside the store.

Concerned by Robinson’s behavior, the off-duty officer attempted to engage him in conversation but received no response. Moments later, the situation escalated dramatically as Robinson moved behind the deli counter and grabbed a butcher-style knife. The off-duty officer immediately alerted store employees and other shoppers, urging them to move away from the area.
As first responders arrived, they found themselves in a tense standoff with Robinson, who was brandishing the large knife and exhibiting signs of emotional distress. Bodycam footage from the responding officers captures the intensity of the situation as they worked tirelessly to de-escalate the situation and persuade Robinson to drop his weapon.

“We’re here to help you,” an officer can be heard saying to Robinson in a calm and reassuring voice. “Just drop the knife, and let’s talk.” However, despite their best efforts, Robinson refused to comply and continued to pose a significant threat to himself and those around him.
After several minutes of intense negotiations, Robinson took a step forward, knife still in hand, prompting officers to deploy less-lethal force. Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident, and Robinson was taken into custody.
The Denver Police Department, in collaboration with the District Attorney’s office and mental health professionals, are currently exploring treatment options for Robinson. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the complex challenges faced by law enforcement officers who are often called upon to navigate mental health crises while ensuring public safety.
