The Indianapolis Colts signed veteran quarterback Joe Flacco to back up Anthony Richardson, marking a new chapter in Flacco’s career after a period of uncertainty. After going unsigned for the entirety of the 2023 offseason, Flacco expressed gratitude for the opportunity to continue playing in the NFL.
“It was obviously a little bit different than last offseason, when I didn’t get any calls at all,” Flacco commented, according to NFL media’s Nick Shook. “But even this offseason, I wasn’t really sure how it was going to go… definitely grateful for Indy to reach out and have this as an opportunity.”
Flacco’s journey last season began with the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad in late November. He eventually stepped into a starting role due to injuries and performed admirably, leading the Browns to a 4-1 record in five regular season starts. He threw for 1,616 yards, 13 touchdowns, and eight interceptions, maintaining a completion percentage of 60.3% and a passer rating of 90.2.
However, his playoff performance was less successful, marked by two interceptions returned for touchdowns in the Browns’ Wild Card Round loss to the Houston Texans. Despite this setback, Flacco had hoped to remain in Cleveland, even in a backup capacity to Deshaun Watson. He admitted surprise at the Browns’ decision to sign Jameis Winston as their second-string quarterback instead.
“When you have something that you love to do and you enjoy putting in the work… I don’t know too many people that would give that up,” Flacco reflected on his continued passion for the game. “One day we’ll figure that out [what else to do]. But I’m not really ready to kind of go figure out what else that may be that I love to do, especially when I’m gonna be given an opportunity to still do what I love to do.”
Flacco acknowledged that his family life, with five children, also influenced his decision to continue playing. Looking ahead to the 2024 season, Flacco is embracing his role with the Colts and eager to contribute to the team’s success. The veteran quarterback’s experience and leadership will be valuable assets as he mentors the young Anthony Richardson. While his starting days may be behind him, Flacco’s dedication to the game remains unwavering as he embarks on this new phase of his career in Indianapolis.
