Joe Flacco unexpectedly became a fan favorite in Ohio during the 2023 NFL season, leading the Cleveland Browns to the playoffs after taking over as starting quarterback in December. However, with Deshaun Watson’s return from injury imminent, Flacco’s chances of starting in 2024 are slim, potentially impacting his free agency decisions.
While the 38-year-old veteran is open to a backup role, he desires playing time. “One backup job may be different than another backup job,” Flacco stated on the Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show. “There’s spots where I’m going to be comfortable taking that role to some extent. But, obviously, I do want to play some games. I feel like I can do that.” This statement highlights Flacco’s competitive spirit and desire to contribute on the field.
In January, Flacco expressed interest in returning to Cleveland but emphasized a need for careful consideration. This suggests a desire for a more significant role than a backup position might offer.
The crucial question remains: will any team offer Flacco a starting quarterback position? During his five starts for the Browns in 2023, he threw for 1,616 yards, 13 touchdowns, and eight interceptions, completing 60.3% of his passes with a 90.2 passer rating. The Browns achieved a 4-1 record under his leadership, securing a playoff berth.
However, Flacco’s playoff performance was lackluster. He threw two pick-sixes in a 45-14 Wild Card Round loss to the Houston Texans, raising concerns about his ability to perform under pressure.
Flacco’s value as a reliable backup quarterback is undeniable. Given his age and recent performances, accepting a backup role might be the most realistic option for the upcoming season. Finding the right fit, a team that offers both a suitable backup position and a potential pathway to playing time, will be key to Flacco’s next career move.
