On November 2nd, a tragic incident unfolded in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where an 18-year-old named Wyatt Beckler lost his life in a police shooting after watching videos about “suicide by cop.” According to investigators, Beckler had been researching the topic and had watched several videos, including one from the Law&Crime Network titled “Man Shot and Killed by Police After Calling 911.”
This particular video detailed the death of 22-year-old Christian Glass, who was shot by police during what appeared to be a mental health crisis. Shortly after watching the video, Beckler made a chilling 911 call himself. In the call, Beckler described a suspect matching his own description, claiming the individual had pulled a gun on him. He provided an address and a vague description of the “suspect” before abruptly ending the call.
Dash camera footage from the responding officer’s vehicle shows Beckler walking along the road. The officer can be heard communicating with dispatch, confirming the location and description of the individual. As the officer approaches Beckler, he repeatedly orders him to put his hands up. Initially, Beckler does not comply, prompting the officer to become increasingly assertive with his commands.
The situation escalates rapidly as Beckler begins walking backward toward the officer, who continues to demand he keep his hands visible. Body camera footage captures the tense moments as Beckler appears to reach for something in his pocket. Fearful for his safety, the officer discharges his weapon, striking Beckler three times.
Despite immediate medical attention from the officers and subsequent transport to the hospital, Beckler succumbed to his injuries in the operating room. A knife was later found in his front pocket. Following a thorough investigation, the Allen County Prosecutor’s office determined the officer’s use of force was justified, and no criminal charges will be filed.
