Bill Lawrence, co-creator of the AppleTV+ series Shrinking, revealed that Michael J. Fox’s public battle with Parkinson’s disease significantly influenced the development of Harrison Ford’s character, Paul, in the show. Ford portrays a therapist grappling with his own Parkinson’s diagnosis while continuing to practice.
Lawrence shared this insight at a PaleyLive event on December 12th, explaining that both he and co-creator Brett Goldstein have personal connections to Parkinson’s, as their fathers both lived with the disease. Parkinson’s disease, according to the National Institute of Aging, is a brain disorder characterized by involuntary movements like tremors, stiffness, and difficulties with balance and coordination.
“It’s cool to get to write about things you care about now,” Lawrence stated. He emphasized the importance of portraying Parkinson’s in a positive light, aiming for inspiration rather than sadness or tragedy, particularly given Fox’s role as his first mentor.
Fox, who starred in Lawrence’s first co-created show, Spin City, publicly announced his Parkinson’s diagnosis in 1998 during the series’ run.
