Judge James C. Chalfant stated that the documents Mars sought should have been provided without resistance. “These requests were not burdensome. Yet, Mars was compelled to file suit, and it appears plain that production would not have occurred without it,” wrote Chalfant.

While the band eventually submitted the documents in December, the judge criticized the delay and ordered Mötley Crüe to cover Mars’ legal fees. The exact reimbursement amount will be decided in a future hearing.

This ruling, however, does not resolve the larger arbitration case in which Mars claims his bandmates violated their agreement by ousting him and attempting to reduce his stake in the band’s revenue.
