Norovirus Outbreak at Los Angeles Fire Evacuee Shelter

A norovirus outbreak has been reported at a Pasadena shelter housing evacuees from the recent Los Angeles wildfires. Norovirus is a highly contagious stomach virus that spreads easily in close quarters.

At least 28 people at the Pasadena Evacuation Shelter have contracted the virus, according to the Pasadena Department of Public Health, as reported by CBS News and CNN. This outbreak coincides with a nationwide surge in norovirus cases, with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reporting double the number of cases compared to the same period last year.

The virus thrives in crowded environments like cruise ships, casinos, and evacuation centers. The CDC explains that infected individuals can shed billions of microscopic norovirus particles, and only a few particles are needed to cause illness.

Norovirus causes acute gastroenteritis, inflammation of the stomach and intestines, leading to symptoms such as diarrhea, stomach pain, and vomiting. Pasadena Public Health acknowledged the common occurrence of illness in congregate living situations like shelters, due to close proximity and shared spaces. They are working with the Red Cross to manage the outbreak.

Infected residents are being isolated, and health officials are increasing handwashing stations, disinfecting bathrooms more frequently, and using norovirus-killing cleansers. The CDC emphasizes that hand sanitizer alone is insufficient against norovirus and recommends thorough handwashing with soap and water.

Proper handwashing is crucial in preventing the spread of norovirus.

The shelter is also mandating gloves for all food handlers. Foodborne norovirus outbreaks are common; last December, over 80 people fell ill after consuming contaminated oysters at a California event.

While highly unpleasant, norovirus symptoms typically subside within a few days, according to the Mayo Clinic. There’s no specific treatment, but staying hydrated is crucial. Severe cases may require intravenous rehydration.

Stephanie Fox, a Red Cross spokesperson, stated that the illness spread has been minimal and that on-site healthcare professionals are available 24/7 to assist those who become sick. She emphasized the Red Cross’s commitment to the health and well-being of residents under their care. The Pasadena Department of Public Health has been contacted for further information.
