Prince Harry made a solo return to the UK to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games, a sporting event he founded for wounded, injured, and sick servicemen and women. The Duke of Sussex touched down on Tuesday afternoon, marking a significant milestone for the organization.
However, the trip wasn’t without its share of missed connections. A spokesperson confirmed that a reunion with his father, King Charles, wouldn’t be possible due to the King’s demanding schedule. The statement emphasized the Duke’s understanding of his father’s commitments and expressed hopes for a future meeting.

Interestingly, both father and son attended separate events merely three miles apart on Tuesday. While Buckingham Palace remained silent on Harry’s visit, it made a significant announcement just hours before his arrival: Prince William would be appointed Colonel-in-Chief of Prince Harry’s former regiment in a joint ceremony the following week. This move underscores the complex dynamics within the royal family, highlighting the strengthening bond between King Charles and Prince William while some relationships remain strained.
This recent visit stands in stark contrast to the first Invictus Games a decade ago. Back then, the atmosphere was markedly different. This time, the Duke of Sussex’s presence was more subdued.
The King’s coronation anniversary, marked by traditional gun salutes, saw Harry attending solo, echoing his solitary appearance at the coronation itself. A brief visit with his father took place in February following the public announcement of the King’s cancer diagnosis.
While Harry and Meghan extended well wishes to Princess Kate after her preventative cancer treatment, there were no overt signs of reconciliation with his brother, Prince William. This detachment is a significant departure from the close bond the brothers once shared.
Despite the undercurrents of family tension, Harry remains dedicated to the Invictus Games. In a 2022 interview, he expressed immense satisfaction with the Games’ impact on participants’ recovery journeys.

Meanwhile, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex continue to forge their own path in California. Prince Archie, their son, celebrated his fifth birthday privately on Monday. This private celebration followed the public birthday acknowledgements of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s children, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, earlier in the year.
Looking ahead, the upcoming Trooping the Colour ceremony, marking the King’s official birthday parade on June 15th, presents a potential opportunity for a reunion. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex attended the event in 2022 but were absent from the balcony appearance, reserved for working royals.
The guest list for this year’s event remains under wraps, leaving the possibility of Harry and Meghan’s attendance uncertain.
Currently, the Sussexes are focused on their upcoming trip to Nigeria, where they will continue to champion the growth and impact of the Invictus Games.
