Prince William Champions Mental Health in Rural Scotland

Prince William, the Duke of Rothesay, recently visited Scotland to address mental well-being challenges in rural communities. His visit focused on highlighting community-led organizations supporting those facing isolation in farming and countryside areas.

William’s first stop was a farm in Carnoustie, Angus, where he engaged with the Farm Safety Foundation (Yellow Wellies). This charity works across the U.K. to improve attitudes towards farm safety and mental health among young farmers.

He participated in a roundtable discussion, emphasizing the importance of combating loneliness and rural isolation. The Scottish Association of Young Farmers Clubs, leading a campaign to address loneliness in farming, launched the “Are Ewe Okay?” initiative in 2016 to destigmatize mental well-being concerns among young farmers.

“I love the countryside, and I love farming as well,” William stated. “I’m conscious that it’s an area that needs maybe support in understanding that there’s access to support out there.” He added, “I think in the farming world, it’s maybe — it’s not talked about as much…yet we know it exists.”

Prince William and Kate Middleton, both advocates for mental well-being, frequently express their love for outdoor activities with their three children. Kate has previously stated that her favorite moments are spent “outside in the countryside.”

William’s second visit was to a Men’s Shed in Carnoustie. This organization fosters community and supports members in developing new skills, ultimately improving their mental health. The Carnoustie and Monifieth Men’s Shed, run by local volunteers, offers activities like woodwork, crafting, and gardening. Members shared how the Men’s Shed has positively impacted their lives by facilitating friendships and providing opportunities for creative learning.

These visits underscore William’s commitment to supporting rural communities and addressing mental health concerns. In 2023, the Duchy of Cornwall and William launched a Mental Health Strategy for Duchy tenants, prioritizing farmers’ mental health and reducing stigma within the agricultural sector.

This engagement follows other recent activities focused on mental health and well-being. William recently visited Child Bereavement UK in Widnes, England. These visits coincide with Kate’s gradual return to royal duties following her cancer remission. She recently promoted her early years mission at the National Portrait Gallery.
