Alex Murdaugh, now a convicted double murderer, is serving a life sentence in a maximum-security prison in South Carolina for the murders of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul. Despite his heinous crimes, Murdaugh has received an outpouring of support from strangers, particularly women, through a prison-issued tablet.
Fitz News in South Carolina, through a Freedom of Information Act request, obtained some of the messages sent to Murdaugh. These messages, primarily from women, range from declarations of love to words of support and sympathy.

One message, sent by Nicollet Kay, states, “I think I love you. I think about you all day every day.” Another woman, Lacy Kay, wrote, “You don’t know me and I don’t know you… I’m unable to get you off of my mind.”
The phenomenon of strangers, especially women, developing affections for notorious criminals, often dubbed “prison groupies,” is not new. This behavior, sometimes referred to as “hybristophilia,” describes the attraction to individuals who have committed violent crimes.

While the motivations behind these affections can vary, some experts suggest that individuals with a history of abuse may be more susceptible to developing these feelings. The power dynamics and perceived vulnerability of the incarcerated individual may appeal to those seeking control or a sense of nurturing.
However, it is crucial to note that hybristophilia is not always indicative of a mental disorder. In many cases, these individuals may simply be drawn to the notoriety and infamy of the criminal, seeking a connection to something sensational.
Interestingly, Murdaugh’s prison records indicate a lack of outgoing communication. While he has received numerous messages, there is no evidence to suggest that he has responded to any of them.

This lack of response could be attributed to several factors, including Murdaugh’s awareness that his communications are monitored or a desire to maintain a low profile. It remains to be seen if Murdaugh will engage with any of these individuals in the future.
The case of Alex Murdaugh and the attention he continues to receive highlight the complex psychological factors at play when individuals develop affections for those who have committed horrific crimes.
