Seamus’s journey began at Manhattan Animal Care & Control in New York City. His condition was dire, requiring immediate and intensive medical intervention. Dr. Gerard Lahenet, D.V.M., a supervising veterinarian with Animal League America, recalls the dog’s arrival, noting his shockingly thin frame and the numerous open wounds covering his body. “I’ve been here 21 years,” Dr. Lahenet shared, “and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a dog with this poor of a body condition.” After a thorough examination ruled out underlying medical issues, the veterinary team concluded that Seamus had been abandoned and starved, likely teetering on the brink of death.

Merino observed Seamus’s eagerness to join her other dogs in their outdoor romps, a testament to his growing vitality. While he wasn’t quite strong enough to keep up, his determination was evident. “You could see his will was there,” Merino remarked, “In time, he’ll be strong enough to join in.”
