These narratives, often fueled by team loyalty or a desire to create controversy, overlooked the severity of Garrett’s actions. Even Garrett’s own teammates and coaches, including quarterback Baker Mayfield, condemned his behavior. Garrett himself issued a public apology, acknowledging the gravity of his mistake.
The incident evoked memories of a similar event in 1982 when Lyle Alzado ripped off an opponent’s helmet and threw it at him. This led to a rule prohibiting the use of a helmet as a weapon, a rule Garrett clearly violated.
The attempts to rationalize Garrett’s behavior underscore a concerning trend in sports media and fan discourse: the tendency to seek justification for unacceptable actions rather than simply condemning them. In this case, the focus should remain on Garrett’s violent act, which endangered the safety of another player and violated the fundamental principles of sportsmanship.
