Texans GM Remains Confident in Dameon Pierce Despite Backfield Changes

Dameon Pierce began the 2023 NFL season as the Houston Texans’ starting running back. However, he quickly lost the starting role to Devin Singletary. With Singletary now a New York Giant, it might seem like Pierce would reclaim the top spot. Not so fast. The Texans traded with the Cincinnati Bengals for Joe Mixon, once again relegating Pierce to a backup role. Despite this, Texans General Manager Nick Caserio insists the team still values Pierce.

In a recent interview on Sports Radio 610, Caserio expressed his confidence in Pierce’s future with the team. He praised Pierce’s current physical condition and positive attitude, stating, “The big thing right now is to be in good condition — which he is. Watching him move on the field, he looks pretty good. He’s got as good an attitude as anyone on the team. We’re glad DP is here. He’s going to be a big part of what we’re doing.” Caserio emphasized Pierce’s dedication, adding, “He’s working his a– off so far, which is great to see.”

Pierce’s 2023 season was a disappointment. He appeared in 14 games, rushing for only 416 yards and two touchdowns, averaging a paltry 2.9 yards per carry. This was a significant drop from his promising rookie year in 2022, where he gained 939 yards and scored four touchdowns with a much more impressive 4.3 yards per carry average.

The 24-year-old Pierce, a University of Florida alumnus, was drafted by the Texans in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. The Texans are hoping he can recapture his rookie season form in 2024. While the addition of Mixon creates a crowded backfield, Caserio’s comments suggest that Pierce will still have a significant role in the Texans’ offensive plans. It remains to be seen how the playing time will be divided between Mixon and Pierce, but the Texans are clearly hoping for a resurgence from their young running back.
