The Houston Texans have significantly bolstered their defense by signing three-time Pro Bowl edge rusher Danielle Hunter to a lucrative two-year contract, as confirmed by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The deal, worth a reported $49 million with the potential to reach $51 million through incentives, includes a substantial $48 million in guaranteed money.
This acquisition marks a major coup for the Texans, who were in need of a premier pass rusher after Jonathan Greenard’s departure in free agency. Hunter, 29, was widely considered one of the top remaining free agents and brings a formidable presence to Houston’s defensive line.
In the 2023 season with the Minnesota Vikings, Hunter delivered a dominant performance, recording 83 tackles, 16.5 sacks, and four forced fumbles. His stellar play earned him a Pro Bowl selection, further solidifying his reputation as one of the league’s most disruptive defensive forces.
Hunter’s journey to NFL stardom began at LSU before being drafted by the Vikings in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft. He quickly made an impact, amassing 56 tackles and 12.5 sacks in his second season.
Following a slight dip in production in 2017, Hunter returned with a vengeance in 2018, tallying 72 tackles, 14.5 sacks, a fumble recovery, and a defensive touchdown. This marked the start of consecutive Pro Bowl appearances, as he replicated his success in 2019 with 70 tackles, 14.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery.
Unfortunately, injuries hampered Hunter’s progress in subsequent years. A neck injury sidelined him for the entire 2020 season, and a torn pectoral muscle limited him to just seven games in 2021.
However, Hunter demonstrated remarkable resilience, returning to form in 2022 with 65 tackles, 10.5 sacks, and a forced fumble. He then surpassed all previous performances in 2023, culminating in his impressive Pro Bowl campaign. The Texans are undoubtedly hoping that Hunter can maintain this elite level of play in Houston.
With the addition of Danielle Hunter, the Texans have made a significant statement of intent, signaling their commitment to building a competitive defense. Pairing Hunter with other talented players on the roster creates a formidable unit that could significantly impact the AFC South landscape.
